A narrator tells the legend of the Golden Juárez, which allegedly was intended as a ransom for Montezuma , being held hostage by the conquistadores . The treasure was lost long ago and never found. However, many daring souls have been proposed to recover the lost wealth of the Aztec Empire , even though the treasure is rumored to be cursed.
Billy is a young man who does not know who his father is , and has no name. Due to the racism of the city against their Mexican descent, during his childhood he suffered racial prejudiceof the local population. He especially hated his stepfather Thomas, who beat him every day. Fed up, Billy left his hometown of Hope to go after the gold of Juarez, but after two years of fruitless searching, found nothing, and finally returns to Esperanza. However, upon arrival, he finds his mother and Thomas dead, lying beneath the words “Call of Juarez” written in blood. A man named Reverend Ray, a former outlaw, and brother Thomas, see Billy standing with his family, and assumes that Billy is the murderer. Billy Ray flees and escapes, but Ray decides it is his duty as God’s emissary hunt down and kill Billy for the crime.
Outside the city, Billy runs through a camp of bandits to escape Ray. After sneaking into their camp, Ray confronts Billy, but Billy escapes throwing on a moving train. Ray follows the train, only to find the bandits assaulting him. He saves the train from bandits, also discovering what direction Billy was going.
Billy decides to stay the father of Molly Ferguson, where he used to work, believing that she is the only one who will believe that he is innocent. Billy Ray follows the room where he meets a group of Texas Rangerswho say they will attack the farm because Mr. Ferguson is a rustler. Ray helps them, and then chases Billy in the field. Billy shoots him, knocking him into a nearby river. Ray returns to the ranch to find that the Rangers were in fact bandits under the command of a man named Juarez. He kills two of the bandits, but the others escape. With his last breath, Mr. Ferguson begs Ray to rescue Molly, who was kidnapped by bandits. Ray runs to catch the bandits, but fails. Aware that Billy was not responsible for the murder of Marisa and Thomas, breaks into tears, believing he has failed in his duty.
Meanwhile, Billy has survived his wounds and fall, and is nursed back to health by Flatwater, a healer apache . Later, after doing some errands for Flatwater, Billy returns to find him dead. The bandit killed then take hostage Billy. Meanwhile, Ray chases the villains in an attempt to redeem himself. He chases on horseback, killing a bandit named Ty Stewart. As he dies, Stewart reveals that the coach goes to the city of Juarez, on the Mexican border.
In Juarez, Billy is delivered to a man named Juárez, who reveals that he is the true father of Billy. He demands to Billy Juarez find gold, otherwise he will kill Molly. Ray then comes and fights the bandits, saving Billy and telling her to escape. Ray fight more bandits and wounds Juarez, who manages to escape, telling Ray he will kill Molly if not bring you gold. Ray assails the quarterdeckJuarez, making their way to a cell, where he meets Molly. However, Juarez traps Ray and Molly inside the cell and ignites. Billy puts out the fire, then faces Juarez. Juárez shoots and leaves him for dead. Billy Ray and then rescues Molly cell. Suddenly, Juarez walks in and shoots Ray, revealing wearing armor. Juarez and Billy fought with fists and Billy defeats him. As he lies dying, Ray realizes that the whole thing was his own fault, and prays that their actions do not cause Billy and Molly die. Recovers enough to see Juarez raising a knife to attack Billy from behind time. Ray kills Juárez, and then dies happily.
Later, Billy and Molly are in the Juarez cemetery over Ray’s grave. Billy says he will follow the advice of Flatwater and no longer flee from his destiny, returning to the town of Esperanza, along with Molly.
