Day of Defeat: Source is the new version of Day of Defeat , the mod for Half-Life on the combats in the European theater during the Second World War . It moves with the acclaimed Source engine, from Valve , which brings a lot of realism, better graphics and sounds, and above all Physics. It is based on team-play in historical settings of the Second World War.
DoD: S was released 26 of September of 2005 , the sales platform, distribution and launch Steam from Valve . In a short time it was a success and spread through the internet servers. I had many bugs that were fixed in the following weeks; for example, a bug by which the players “stuck” and could not move until one of them fell down.
When it was launched, the package included four maps: dod_anzio, dod_avalanche, dod_donner and dod_flash. Over the months, new maps have been coming out from the valve, with new game modes; one of them, dod_argentan, was added in the update of November 30, 2005, and quickly became popular among the players. On January 26, 2006 a “remake” of the dod_kalt map was added, adapting the DoD, thus increasing the number of maps to 6. Deserved mentions have the videos that Valve has taken to promote their latest maps, in which, with sequences of the game, they have made 3 videos that have nothing to envy to a movie and that can be found in video search engines with the titles of “Prelude to Victory”, “Jagd” or “Colmar”. It is also appreciated that there are people who are dedicated to making custom maps for the Day of Defeat. Some are adaptations of old DoD maps. Others, totally new inventions and great playability. All with the same purpose, get the player to spend hours having fun.
By joining the server, the player chooses a team to play for – be it the Allies of World War II or the Wehrmacht(German Armed Forces). After this, you must choose a class; The available ones are: Fusilier, Assault, Reinforcement, Sniper, Machine Gun or Rocket. Some servers may limit the number of players in each class, usually to prevent the abuse of snipers or machine guns; also some servers have the option of random choice of classes. Once you have the class the player starts at a predetermined point on the map, and must fight for the control of the objectives. If he dies, to return to battle he must wait for the next wave of reinforcements, which takes between 5 and 15 seconds depending on the map and the number of players in it. Any teammate who dies with him suffers the same fate and must also wait. The player also has the possibility to change class and even team while waiting for reinforcements. It is possible to do it while you are alive, but doing so increases the player’s death count.
Compared to other FPS , Day of Defeat: Source allows the player only a small amount of life; which causes that being reached by a single shot results in death. Being shot in the head with any weapon causes death. That is why players must cover each other and use teamwork to achieve victory.
All the weapons of the game have limits made within reality. For example, heavy machine guns must be mounted on their tripods before they are used or the control of the weapon is completely lost, the bazooka must rest on the shoulder before firing (the player moves slower and is more vulnerable in this period), the sniper it loses precision if it does not use the telescopic sight, and to the grenades it is necessary to remove the insurance before throwing them. “Cooking” a grenade for more than 5 seconds will cause it to explode in the player’s hand, killing himself and anyone around him, including his allies if the server has “friendly fire” activated.
