The main elements of the game are largely shared with the original edition but the Definitive Edition builds on it. The remastering includes new improved graphics for troops and buildings, the ability to zoom in and out, and a new spectator mode. It also features a new campaign called The Last Khans and four new civilizations: Bulgarians, Cumans, Lithuanians, and Tatars .1 It also includes all previous expansions of the original edition (The Conquerors) and HD Edition (The Forgotten, The African Kingdoms, Rise of the Rajas).

Players can choose between Original AI, HD Edition AI, and Ultimate Edition AI. The original AI had to cheat to be competitive, while the new HD Edition and Definitive Edition AIs are advanced enough to not require any cheating. When the old and new AI faced each other in a test, the new one easily defeated the old one. The search for routes in the units has also been improved. Players can choose between the original AI, the AI from the HD edition of the game, and a more recent AI developed for the DE1.
